Some Ubuntu Basics

Interface

In Ubuntu the close, maximize and minimize buttons are in the top left corner. They are hidden until you mouse over them. The little menu on top of most windows in Windows with File and Edit etc is also up on the top bar. The closest thing to the Taskbar is the bar on the left, it shows apps that have been pinned(similar to quick launch) as well as apps that are currently open and mounted volumes(USB Drives and CDs).

Accessing Apps

To get to your applications, click the Ubuntu symbol in the top left corner. It will bring up Unity Lenses. Click the icons on the bottom to view the different lenses. There is a lens for every type of multimedia. The Application lens is the second one. Click it and click Installed to list your installed applications. You can search them at any time by clicking in the box up top and typing what you want to search. You can install new apps using the Ubuntu Software Center.

What Do These Apps Do?

Here are some Windows equivalents for the Ubuntu Apps,

Firefox > Internet Explorer
Calculator > Calculator
Rhythmbox > Windows Media Player
Libre Office Suite > Microsoft Office Suite
Terminal > Command Line (But much more useful)
System Settings > Control Panel
Transmission > uTorrent
Text Editor > Notepad
Shotwell > Windows Photo Manager
