VirtualBox or HDD?
There are two ways to install Ubuntu, with VirtualBox or onto your hard drive (like Windows is). I HIGHLY recommend that you install your freshly downloaded Ubuntu install in VirtualBox to get a feel for how the install process and the operating system works. After you install it in VirtualBox you can see how you like Ubuntu and play around with it without consequences. So What Is VirtualBox?
VirtualBox is simply a computer within your computer. It allows you to create Virtual Machines, which are basically little computers configured how you want them, it allows you to mess around with new operating system without messing up your actual computer. The Virtual Machines you create can be deleted at any time if you decide to put Ubuntu on your actual hard drive, or just want to free up some space.
Well How Do I Get VirtualBox?
To download VirtualBox click the link below for you operating system.
Windows
OS X
Installing VirtualBox
To install VirtualBox click the file you downloaded and follow the install dialogs. If you don't know what you are doing just click next and allow when prompted. You will be notified when the install finishes and from there you can launch VirtualBox.
Setting Up Your Ubuntu Virtual Machine
After launching VirtualBox you should get a window similar to the one above, but blank. Click New in the top left corner to configure a new Virtual Machine.
A small drop down will pop up, name your Virtual Machine and set your memory size to at least 1024MB, 2048MB is recommended if you have enough RAM in your computer. Click create in the bottom right corner and it will take you to the Hard Drive Setup.
Here all you have to do is change the File Size to at least 8GB, I recommend 20GB or above to give you some wiggle room. After you have done this then click the create button in the bottom right corner.
Now you should see your newly created Virtual Machine as an entry in the list on the left. To launch it and begin the install, just click the Start arrow up top.
