Installing Ubuntu in VirtualBox

Starting the Install

Now you are ready to install Ubuntu! Set aside 30 minutes to an hour to install this on your computer. Start by going into VirtualBox and selecting the new Virtual Machine you made, then click start.

You will be prompted to choose a disc,
  1. Click the little folder icon
  2. Browse to your Downloads
  3. Select the Ubuntu ISO you downloaded earlier (Ubuntu-14.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso etc.)
  4. Click Start

Installing

Ubuntu will begin to boot up, give it a few minutes and you should come to the screen that allows you to select whether to use the Live CD or to Install. I never use the Live CD in VirtualBox so click Install Ubuntu.

Select both of the check boxes and click Continue to proceed.

Leave this option as-is and click Install Now. Note that this is where you can mess up your computer when not installing to VirtualBox. I will demonstrate how to configure this screen when we install Ubuntu to the hard drive later. But for now it is harmless because we are using VirtualBox.

Select your time zone by clicking where you live on the map or typing in the name of a major city in your time zone. The highlighted area will change when you change your time zone so you can see if you selected the right one or not. The example above shows the Eastern Time Zone because I live in Florida. Click Continue when finished.

Select your keyboard layout. If you are not sure what keyboard layout you have it is most likely the default. Click Continue when finished.

Insert your user information. All these settings are up to you and your personal preferences. A cool feature of Ubuntu is that it tells you the strength of you password, my password is weak because it is simply password.

Your almost done! This screen signifies that Ubuntu is installing. Go get some coffee or somethings to eat as this can take a while depending on the speed of your computer and internet.

The install is complete, click Devices, then CD/DVD Devices, then remove disc from virtual drive. Finally, click Restart Now.

Congratulations, Ubuntu is now installed on your VirtualBox Virtual Machine. Now you can access Ubuntu anytime by opening VirtualBox, selecting your Virtual Machine and hitting start. Ubuntu should be booting now since you clicked Restart Now.
