Configuring Ubuntu For VirtualBox

Its Installed Now What?

Now that Ubuntu is installed we need to set it up so you can use it efficiently in VirtualBox. This requires the installation of VirtualBox Guest Additions, a set of drivers made by VirtualBox to allow your Virtual Machine to interface with your host (your real computer). It allows full resolution full screen as well as file sharing and many other tools.

Lets Set It Up Then!

VirtualBox has a set of commands that use your host key. Your host key is displayed in the bottom right corner of your screen. Start up Ubuntu and press Host+D to pop in your virtual Guest Additions CD (When you are preforming commands make sure that you click inside your Virtual Machine first to verify that it is selected). Ubuntu will read this like it is a real CD.

A popup asking if you want to run this software will appear, click Run.

Another popup asking you to Authenticate this decision will appear, simply type in your password and click Authenticate.

Guest Additions will start to install, a terminal window displays what is going on during the install. This may take a few minutes.

When it says Press Return to close this window... the just press the Enter key.

Now click the menu in the top right, this is a system menu that you use in Ubuntu to shut down, restart, log out, access system preferences etc. Click Shut Down and select Restart.

You now have a fully-functional Ubuntu install! When the Virtual Machine restarts then press Host+F to enter fullscreen mode, this is what your computer will look like when Ubuntu is installed to your hard drive. Please note that you do not have to do any of this post UNLESS you are using VirtualBox.
